Manchester Airport T2 Transformation

Introducing #YOURNEWT2

ADXBA Part Of Astra Group

Manchester Airport has completed a £1 billion transformation of Terminal 2 which includes digital display solutions provided by ADXBA. The company was responsible for designing, installing, and commissioning Manchester Airport Group’s displays throughout the terminal as well as supplying ongoing support and content management services.

The extended Terminal 2 is the centrepiece of Manchester Airport’s Transformation Programme which was designed to provide the North with a modern gateway to international travel. ADXBA were approached to provide full digital display consultancy and design services for the project as Manchester Airport Group’s official “Framework Provider for Digital” (a contract that the company has retained since 2009.). This included installing a range of D6 and D12 advertising displays across the new terminal space and delivering an 81 square-metre LED “wonderwall” which forms a central feature alongside a distinctive honeycomb lighting grid in the main atrium of the departure lounge.  Using the Broadsign CMS provided by ADXBA, the epic display can deliver advertising content and passenger information, act as a backdrop for live activations and provide interactive visitor experiences. ADXBA will provide content management services and both remote and on-site monitoring and service support via the in house developed “Unity” service tool as part of the ongoing contract.

Chief information officer for ManchesterAirport Group, Nick Woods, said,

“The IT team at MAG have worked with ADXBA for over 10 years and are continually impressed with the end-to-end service provided by them, installing and maintaining large format digital displays at Manchester Airport.”

The MAG transformation programme was announced in 2015 and originally scheduled to open in Summer 2020, but the project was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, officially opening on July 14th, 2021. Fortunately, ADXBA had already completed the design process (including the mechanical and structural engineering designs for the LED display’s supporting steelwork) before the pandemic struck, so the team was able to take advantage of the reduced site activity during lockdown to complete the installation and commissioning of the displays to the highest standard, including meticulously cladding the perimeter of the giant LED display so that it blends seamlessly into the physical space. The result is a high-impact installation that ADXBA’s operations director, Gareth Tuxworth, describes as, “Our proudest achievement to deliver our largest indoor display with quality high on the agenda.”

Words from managing director of Manchester Airport, Karen Smart:

“After a long wait, we are delighted to have welcomed the first passengers to our new Terminal Two. It is a proud milestone for our airport as we begin to emerge from the restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 crisis and an important moment in our 83-year history. This project was always about offering the modern airport experience that families and businesses across the north deserve as they travel through their international gateway to the world and our new terminal certainly delivers on that goal.”
